19th Century Chinese Document Box

19th Century Chinese Document Box. Elm wood in Black lacquer with bronze hardware having a pine wood top shelf compartment in red lacquer. Nicely made traditional Chinese joinery, in very good condition. Small dings and wear to the wood. These traditional small storage boxes where widely used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in China by upper class (Social Bureaucrats & Gentry) and the merchant class. Mostly referred to as document boxes and also comfort boxes. The boxes where used to hold important papers, jewelry, gold, silver, and also used for small personal items. Very nice usable decorative box.
